View RecordsFind Rowan County criminal court records through the proper clerk, choose a case copy or certified county search, and avoid misrouting a county public-records request.
The current Rowan County Public Records Request Form states that case/court, civil, criminal, divorce and probate records fall within the jurisdiction of the Rowan County Clerk of Court and gives 704-797-3001 for that office. Use the Clerk route for a Rowan criminal court file rather than treating the county’s general public-records form as the custodian.
| Need | Official North Carolina route | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Certified Rowan County criminal background check | Clerk of Superior Court background-check guidance | Single-county name search; request through the county clerk using Form AOC-CR-314 and the stated fee/payment rules. |
| Free non-certified search at courthouse | Public access computers at the clerk’s office | Can search county or statewide non-certified background information; printing may carry a charge. |
| Online case information | North Carolina eCourts Portal | Useful for public case information, but NC Courts says people performing background checks should use the county clerk rather than the Portal. |
| Personal statewide record review | North Carolina SBI route described by NC Courts | A separate non-certified fingerprint-based personal-history process; not the same as a Rowan certified clerk search. |
The North Carolina Courts guidance directs certified single-county checks to the Clerk of Superior Court and identifies Form AOC-CR-314.
The certified county product is a name search for the selected county, not a fingerprint-based statewide repository check.
NC Courts lists $25 for the certified county criminal background check.
For mail, NC Courts lists money order or certified check and says personal checks are not accepted. In person, it lists credit card, cash, money order or certified check.
NC Courts says courthouse public-access computers can be used to search county or statewide criminal background information without a search charge.
This self-service route does not turn the result into a certified Rowan County clerk product. Printing may have a charge.
Use it to identify cases and jurisdictions, then request the actual case document or certified county product when formal proof is required.
North Carolina Courts describes the Portal as a way to search public case information by fields such as name, case number and attorney. On the same criminal-background-check guidance, however, it says individuals performing background checks should use the county clerk rather than the Portal.
That distinction matters when a receiving organization asks for a criminal background check rather than a list of case search results.
NC Courts directs people seeking their own statewide criminal history to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The process described is fingerprint-based and non-certified. It is broader geographically than a Rowan-only certified name search, but it is not interchangeable with the county-certified product.
